Welcome to the Research Section of Karate The Japanese Way

This section will highlight some very significant research projects, writings, and resources that are available to you on the web, in texts, and wherever else research may lead. If you have information of good martial arts resources and think that they might be of use to the people visiting this site, please contact me and we will review, and if possible, include them here.

Rob Redmond, the webmaster of http://www.24fightingchickens.com, is also the owner and operator of one of the best karate sites on the Internet, bar none. 24FC has gone through many stages of development and continues to surprise and inform. Off-line for a short hiatus, 24FC is back on line and ready to rock. Rob has been a profound influence on my own writing and work here with KTJW. I am truly honored to know the man. His site gets updated frequently. Go check it out now.

Mark's Thesis

ISOK logo

The International Society of Okinawan/Japanese Karate-Do is a relatively new organization which has representatives in countries all over the world, primarily through on-line discussions, training seminars, and through its affiliates in other international karate organizations. As an alternative to some of the larger international karate organizations, the ISOK provides a means through which karate instructors and organizations can train, promote seminars and training camps, and to grade for promotion. Keenly interested in furthering karate through association, inter-style research and publication, the ISOK is not only an organization of considerable talent, but also potential for growth and development. Currently headed by Elmar Schmeisser, the ISOK draws expertise in karate from many different karate styles, including Kyokushin karate, Shudokan, Ryukyu Kempo, and Goju-ryu. Follow the links in this site to get more information from the ISOK homepage.

Budo Symposium banner

The Budo Symposium is a tremendously ambitious project of bringing together studies in history, the social sciences, and perhaps even some aesthetic studies of traditional karate. Accessing a wide bandwidth of writers, thinkers, and teachers in karate, an annual symposium is held at the University of Missouri in St. Louis. If you are in the area and would like to either participate or attend, access this site for more information. Go to http://www.budosymposium.org.

Once again, do you know of a site or resource that has significant and positive contributions to make to the greater Shotokan world? Drop me a line. All submissions will be seriously considered.
